Duck festival in Knowlton
Knowlton’s 21st annual duck festival will offer new flavours on the weekend of Sept. 24 and 25. Planned as a street party beside the old village courthouse and town hall, the festival will include new duck products in its non-stop free tastings of regional food and drink.
Not forgotten will be the traditional Hot Duck ($5 each) from Brome Lake Ducks. Although the Knowlton-based company suffered fires in July and January, it will supply duck sausage for this popular snack. Other Quebec duck companies — Canard et Cie, Ferme les Canardises and Ducs de Montrichard — will offer their specialties in a group of about 25 exhibitors presenting cheeses, local wines and cider, teas, spices and local preserves. Bring a cooler to keep fresh products cool or for picnics on tables provided. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Children can play inflatable games in Coldbrook Park, which is just down England Hill from the festival site at Lakeside Rd. and Victoria St. A petting zoo and ice cream will be offered. The annual race using plastic ducks will be expanded as an all-day affair, beginning every half-hour at the England Hill bridge.
Six Knowlton restaurants will participate with duck dishes on their menus; some will offer 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. specials. Concerts will be given by three local groups. Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., performers will be the Knowlton Harmony Band and the three-woman Lovely Brothers. Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m., the rock ’n’ roll Random Chance Band will perform.
Information: or by email: To reach Knowlton, follow highway 10 East to exit 90, and then highway 243 to Knowlton, about 1-1/4 hours from the Champlain Bridge.
New shop, new bread
A new loaf of bread called Le Gascon has been launched to mark the opening of the seventh shop in the Pâtisserie de Gascogne chain. The new shop is located at 212 Curé-Labelle Blvd., Rosemère, 579-630-6444. The bread, made with 20 per cent rye flour and using the long-fermentation method, is being sold throughout the chain. Besides pastry and bread, chocolates, ice cream, sandwiches, salads and cooked dishes, head chef Philippe Labbé is offering both breakfast and light lunches at the new location.
