MORE than 100,000 football fans were crammed into Tehran’s Azadi Stadium in amazing scenes today as Iran beat China 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier.
Fans grab a view stuck between giant photos of Ayatollahs Khomeini and Ali Khamenei

* * * Supporters clambered up to sit on the perimeter wall and on floodlight pylyons to catch a glimpse of the game between two countries not renowned for their football.
Some fans watched the game between two giant photos of Iran’s leaders past and present – Ayatollah Khomeini and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
And a Danish expert on Chinese football said reports in Beijing reported the crowd was more than 100,000.
Mads Davidsen, who is Shanghai SIPG‘s technical director, tweeted that there were 100,000 spectators at the game.

Other estimates put the attendance at just under 100,000, although it will probably be impossible to put an exact figure on the number of fans at the game.
The Azadi Stadium was built in 1971, and it officially holds 78,000 fans.
However it can be opened up to more supporter and its record attendance is 128,000 for a World Cup qualifier between Iran and Australia in 1998.
