TEHRAN, Apr. 04 (MNA) – Names of four Paralympic athletes and one Iranian team have been added to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Siamand Rahman, Majid Farzin, Zahra Nemati and Morteza Mehrzad are the four Iranian Paralympic athletes whose names have been registered in the Guinness Book of Records which is a reference book published annually, listing world records and national records.
Siamand Rahman, whose earlier record stood at 296 kilograms, pushed an incredible 310kg world record for gold in Men's +107kg Group A at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Competing against nine rivals in Pavilion 2 of Riocentro, Iran's Majid Farzin won gold of Men's 80kg of powerlifting at Rio. Aspiring and powerful Majid Farzin of Iran overcame the 240-kilogram weight in his third attempt to break both Paralympics and world records. Despite lifting the 244kg weight with a great deal of difficulty in his fourth trial, the move received red lights by judges and Farzin came out first in Men's 80kg of powerlifting competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sept. 12, 2016.
Iran’s tallest national and member of sitting volleyball team Morteza Mehrzad, with a height of 246 centimeters, offered an eye-catching performance attracting attention of spectators and the media. He now holds the record of the tallest athlete ever participating in Paralympic Games.
Zahra Nemati made her Olympic debut in Rio weeks before the Paralympics. She won her second individual Paralympic title in the women’s individual recurve open in the Brazilian city. She also took silver in the mixed team recurve open with Ebrahim Ranjbar.
On the final day of the Rio 2016 Paralympics, Iran snatched gold in men's sitting volleyball by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1 at Riocentro on Sunday to bring a small moment of joy to the delegation who is mourning over demise of Iranian cyclist Bahman Golbarnezhad who died following an accident in the road race. The gold medal marks the sixth trophy attained by Iran’s sitting volleyball squad in Paralympic Games.
