Iran secure further four men's freestyle gold medals to finish on seven at Asian Wrestling Championships
By Daniel Etchells Wednesday, 24 April 2019
Iran capped their domination of the men’s freestyle events at the Asian Wrestling Championships by claiming four of the five gold medals at stake on the second day and twice denying hosts China a title in the process in Xi'an.
China’s bid to stop the Iranian juggernaut fizzled out when world silver medallist Deng Zhiwei fell to a 2-1 defeat against Yadollah Mohebi in the last bout of the night at Xi’an Electronic Science and Technology University Gymnasium, the 125 kilograms final.
That was the same score by which Iran’s Behnam Ehsanpoor had edged out China’s Liu Minghu in the 61kg final to regain the title he had won two years ago in New Delhi.
The 125kg bronze medals went to India’s Sumit Sumit and South Korea’s Dong-Hwan kim, while Japan’s Yudai Fujita and India’s Rahul Balasaheb Aware rounded off the 61kg podium.
Iran’s other gold medals were seized by world under-23 champion Kamran Ghasempour at 86kg and world bronze medallist Alireza Karimimachiani at 92kg.
Both were hardly challenged during the competition and finished with technical fall victories in the finals.
Ghasempour beat Kyrgyzstan’s Aligadzhi Gamidgadzhiev 10-0, while Karimimachiani defeated India’s Viky Viky 11-0.
India’s Deepak Punia and Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Ganbaatar were the 86kg bronze medallists.
The 92kg bronze medals went to China’s Xiao Sun and Japan’s Atsushi Matsumoto.
The national Iranian freestyle wrestling team has powerfully won the Asian Championships in China with 220 points.
At the end of day 2 of the 2019 Asian Championships which was held in China’s Xi’an on 23-24 April, the Iranian freestyle wrestlers were crowned after clinching 7 gold medals and 3 bronzes.
Iranian national team won three gold medals and 2 bronzes on the opening day of the competitions yesterday.
Reza Atrianchi(57kg), Behnam Ehsanpour (61kg), Bahman Taimouri (79kg), Kamran Ghasempour (86kg), Alireza Karimi (92kg) and Yadolah Mohebi (125kg) were the gold winners, while Peyman Biabani (56kg), Mohammad Nokhodi (74kg) and Yunes Emami (70kg) brought home Iran’s three bronze medals.
Iran became champion with 220 points followed by India (155pts) and Kazakhstan (129pts) in the second and third places, respectively.
