Doha, Sep 5 (Prensa Latina) Qatari authorities inaugurated today the port of Hamad, considered one of the biggest of the Persian Gulf, whose works cost 7,400,000 dollars.
The terminal is the key to a country that depends entirely on imports.
At the opening ceremony, Qatari Minister of Transport and Trade, Yasim Saif Ahmed al Sulaiti, stressed that the works (lasting a decade) were completed before the deadline and with the expected budget.
The new port, 14 times larger than the former maritime terminal in Doha, has a total constructed area of 28.5 square kilometers and three terminals, of which only one is operational at the moment.
This project has a control tower of 110 meters high, a dock of four kilometers long, and a channel of 700 meters wide and 17 deep, with capacity to receive the largest freighters in the world.
When fully operational, in a period of three to four years, it is estimated that it will reach a capacity of 5,000 vessels and handle containers totaling 7.5 million TEUs (capacity unit equivalent to 20 feet) per year, according to official data.
The port began operating last December, the best month so far, when 49,000 containers were transported through its docks with about 80,000 tons of cargo.
