Final results from a population count that takes place every 10 years :Accordingly Iran's population is 19 million while Tehran's inhabitants are 1,531,000.
Population count was performed since the Achaemenid era for agricultural and taxing purposes. After introduction of Islam to Iran, it was used to determine the number of different religion followers for collection of a tax called Jaziyah from non-Muslims. In Qajar era, city gate-keepers mostly performed the task. In 1862, population count in Tehran was conducted scientifically in 55 days by Abdolghaffar Najmoddoleh, the math teacher at Darolfonoon school, according to the results, Tehran had 155,736 residents, 147,256 of which were civilians and the rest (8,480) were soldiers.
After foundation of Civil Registration Office Founded in 1918, due to the need for more statistical data, the Ministry of Internal Affairs was given the task and the first related law passed the Majlis in 1939 after which a count took place on June, 23, 1939 in Kashan. Population count took place on Sep, 27, 1940 in Tabriz before Mashhad, Kerman, Shiraz, Ardebil, Yazd, Isfahan, Hamedan, Rasht and Kermanshah. The experience in smaller cities provided knowledge and tools for a count in Tehran on March, 1, 1941. The results showed that Tehran had 540,087 residents at the time....
