Muscat: In a significant step to strengthen cultural ties between Iran and Oman, a centre for teaching the Persian language has opened in Muscat, in response to the demand of the local community.

"The decision to open the centre was made in light of their historical and cultural affinities, as well as the fact that the people of the two countries are interacting more and need to know both Arabic and Persian," Iranian Ambassador Ali Akbar Sibeveih told Times of Oman.

According to the ambassador, registration of applicants began two weeks ago, with the first class being held on Sunday. The centre is being run under the supervision of Oman's Ministry of Education. "The agreement to set up the centre was signed a couple of years ago, and the permit for the establishment of the centre was officially granted two months ago," said Sibeveih.

Each term lasts for ten to 12 weeks, and classes are held every other day, he said.

"Classes are held on odd and even days, and students have the option to choose based upon their schedule. Each class lasts for two hours, from 6pm to 8pm, and we plan to add classes from 4pm to 6pm," he added.

Both Omanis and expatriates can apply, the ambassador said, noting that 60 people have registered.

"The centre has received a very positive response, especially from companies that are trading between Oman and Iran," Sibeveih said.

Currently, the centre has four classes, with a capacity of 20 people each, and three instructors are teaching at the centre. "The number of instructors will increase, and the centre will be further equipped in the future," he said.

According to the ambassador, after the completion of the courses, students will receive a certificate approved by Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, one of the top universities in Iran.

"Course books published by the same university are being used at the centre," Sibeveih said.

He added that there are plans for teaching Arabic at the centre in the future.

"This centre will help strengthen ties between the two friendly countries, and Iran is ready to provide the necessary support for Oman to establish a similar centre for teaching Arabic in Tehran. We will definitely welcome such a decision," Sibeveih concluded.

The centre is located on Al Inshirah Street, Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos. Registration is open from 4pm to 7pm on weekdays. Those interested may contact 24691051 for further information.
